How to get to Koh Tonsay
Koh Tonsay - as known as Rabbit Island - is located 4.5 kilometres from Kep town. The boat ride to Rabbit Island from Kep should take about 20 minutes. If you are staying in Kep during your trip to Cambodia, it is highly recommended that you take a break and travel to Koh Tonsay before returning to Kep. During the day, numerous boats travel from Kep to Rabbit Island and vice versa, so you can easily decide whether to visit the Island during the day or overnight, depending on your preferences. A trip to the island during the day costs $7 USD, while an overnight trip costs $10 USD. You can book your boat ticket either at your hotel in Kep or directly at Kep Pier. When you arrive at Kep Pier, you will see a large number of Cambodian tourists queuing to book a boat trip. To avoid getting stuck in that situation, book a ticket in advance through your hotel, and that ticket will also provide you with a quick tuk-tuk transfer to Kep Pier.
What to do in Koh Tonsay?
Swimming
Swimming is an essential part of any beach holiday. That is also true for a trip to Rabbit Island in order to maximise your travel experiences. Almost all of the beaches surrounding Rabbit Island are warm and shallow, with crystal clear seawater, making them ideal for both children and inexperienced swimmers. If you want to have an out-of-this-world swimming experience, you must spend at least one night on the island and swim from the main beach at night. When diving at night, you may be lucky enough to be in the centre of a sea of endless sparkles emanating from thousands of bioluminescent plankton hidden in the night seawater.
Strolling
If you have a strong desire to travel, Koh Tonsay is the place to go. Because the island has many deserted beaches with golden sand and clear water, you can easily arrange your own trip by strolling around the island. It only takes about an hour and a half to two hours to walk around the 8-kilometre perimeter of Koh Tonsay. If you want a quick and easy trip around the island, just go in the right direction, but watch out for high tide because wading through a mangrove forest can get you wet. Another option is to take a walk through the island's interior, which is very hilly and densely forested. It is necessary for you to hire a guide to assist you in navigating the jungle, which will cost you approximately $5 USD.
Fishing
A fishing trip is one of the best ways to see the island. You can choose between fishing on a boat and fishing off the coast; it is entirely up to you. You should seek advice from locals or your tour guide for a memorable fishing trip. Visitors who intend to spend time fishing on board can rent a boat for $15 to $25 USD per half-hour to four-hour trip. You will then be given essential fishing equipment, such as a handcrafted fishing rod and cuttlefish as bait. If you catch something, the local restaurant will be happy to cook it for you using whatever recipes you want. Always bring sunscreen and a sun protection shirt with you on board to protect your skin from the harsh sun.
