About Choeung Ek Genocidal Centre
- Location: Roluos Village, Sangkat Cheung Aek, Phnom Penh, Cambodia
- Open: Daily from 7.30 am to 5.30 pm.
One of the several sites of the Khmer Rouge mass murders is located about 15 kilometres southwest of the city centre. The Choeung Ek Killing Field are a gloomy reminder of the Khmer Rouge's terror, whose vicious dictatorship ruled Cambodia between 1975 and early 1979 with the goal of transforming the country into a socialist agrarian society.
It is estimated that between one and three million Cambodians were killed during Pol Pot's totalitarian rule in less than four years. Many died as a result of famine and disease, but hundreds of thousands of Cambodians were slaughtered, including intellectuals, educated individuals such as teachers and doctors, government opponents, and even anyone suspected of being an opponent.
It is estimated that 17,000 people died here at Choeung Ek. The victims here were taken from S-21, the Khmer Rouge's maximum-security jail, now the Tuol Sleng Museum. There are 129 mass graves here, with 86 of them excavated and the bones of 8,985 persons exhumed. A memorial stupa with over 8,000 skulls stands in the heart of the region.

Key Notes Before Your Visit to Choeung Ek Genocidal Centre
This location cannot be seen as a tourist attraction
Choeung Ek Killing Field is not for everyone, as it contains a number of extremely powerful photos and sites. It may not be the greatest spot to visit if you are uncomfortable with such sights or if you have young children.
It is not enjoyable to visit the Phnom Penh killing fields and other memorials of Cambodia's brutal communist regime. It is both emotional and disturbing. It weighs heavy on the soul. Nonetheless, it is essential not only for understanding the country but for understanding humanity as a whole.
Be respectful and Remember these etiquettes
Respect is essential: while this mass grave and memorial is a popular tourist destination, it should not be perceived or treated as such. Although your emotional reaction to and experience of the killing fields will be subjective, there are clear objective standards and guidelines in place for site visitors. These are all on the signage in Choeung Ek, but knowing them ahead of time will help you prepare.
We strongly suggest you follow these etiquettes in addition to your common sense:
- Dress modestly: You must not wear attire that exposes your back, shoulders, knees, or midriffs. The site's dress code expressly prohibits sleeveless shirts, crop tops, skin-tight clothes, and short shorts (above the knee).
- Don't make loud noises: Visitors are advised to remain quiet throughout their visit to the centre-this does not mean silence, but rather being careful of your surroundings when speaking on the site.
- Don't take anything: It should go without saying, but you are not permitted to take away any bones or other artifacts from the site.
- Remove shoes: Before stepping up the steps to the Memorial Stupa tower, which shelters thousands of skulls and is a focal point of the killing fields visit, you must remove your shoes.
