Most hostels have a huge common room. Guests can eat and chat at a huge table. If you're friendly, you can easily make friends in this room.
The dorm is convenient. You have 1 bed and 1 drawer (many places do not have drawers for storage). That's enough for backpackers. Because they're out all day, they need a place to shower and sleep. They returned to the hotel all day the next day. When I backpack, I leave early and return late.
